US citizen Berenson, imprisoned in Peru, has son

LIMA, Peru (AP) — The parents of New Yorker Lori Berenson say she has given birth to a baby boy while serving a 20-year sentence in Peru for collaborating with leftist guerrillas in the 1990s.

The 39-year-old is married to ex-Tupac Amaru Revolutionary Movement member Anibal Apari, whom she met in jail.

Her parents said Wednesday that the baby was delivered cesarean section because the pregnancy exacerbated herniated disks in Berenson's back. She will require spinal surgery upon recovery.

Berenson is eligible for conditional liberty in November 2010. Peruvian law permits Berenson to raise the child, Salvador Anespori Apari Berenson, in prison until age 3.

The MRTA is best known for its four-month takeover of the Japanese ambassador's residence in 1996 in Lima.
